Position Description:

Responsible for all activities related to the care and maintenance of the golf course, grounds, and equipment.  Hire, train and supervise staff.  Apply relevant landscaping, horticultural principles to assure that quality standards are consistently achieved and/or exceeded.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Staffing:

  • Manage the recruitment and selection of staff with the aid of the Office Manager.
  • Conduct annual staff performance evaluations and greenkeeper assessments.
  • Coordinate onboarding of new staff including, operational, equipment and safety training for new hires.

Operations:

  • Coordinate, plan and implement golf maintenance operations schedule for golf course and all grounds through ASB taskTracker so standards are achieved or surpassed daily (Monday-Sunday).
  • Communicate daily operations plans with Golf Ops and Golf Academy Staff throughout all areas of the golf course including practice centers.
  • Plan, schedule, and manage tournaments and special events schedule by monitoring event calendars, communicating with Special Event staff, and conducting course setup walkthroughs with event coordinators.
  • Coordinate with Assistant Superintendent(s) and Irrigation Technician to ensure preventive maintenance (edging and trimming) is performed on all equipment associated with irrigation (pumps, valves, PRVs, valve boxes, quick couplers, sprinklers).
  • Review and evaluate daily setup of the golf course.
  • Oversee collection, accuracy, and staff schedule of golf course data through the GreenKeeperApp (GKA). This includes the following:
    • Green Speed (Stimpmeter)
    • Clipping Volume
    • Surface firmness (Tru-Firm)
    • Soil moisture (POGO, Toro TurfGuard and TurfRAD) *coordinate data collection with Assistant Superintendent(s) and Irrigation Technician.
  • Assist in the development of the annual maintenance budget and operating plan.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination and implementation of golf course projects
  • Oversee and assist all planting, grow-in and long-term care of turf and plants throughout the property.
  • Coordinate all plant inputs with the other Assistant Superintendent(s), IPM Technician and Irrigation Technician to provide optimal conditions for the guests of Chambers Bay.
  • Maintain accurate (up to date) GPS maps of golf course and grounds (landscape beds, sports fields, park lawns, park landscape, etc.) through the use of GKA-CIS within Chambers Creek Regional Park.

Safety, Education and Training:

  • As the Agronomy Department Safety Coordinator, strive for zero accidents through weekly Safety Training and meetings. Maintain communication with Chambers Bay Safety Coordinator.
  • Maintain accurate records of Safety Training and meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws, OSHA rules and regulations, L&I rules and regulations relating to: staff safety and public safety.
  • Ensure staff are supplied and effectively using proper PPE appropriate for the assigned task.
  • Assign staff to maintain clean and organized Buildings and Surrounds.
  • Pursue and attend continuing education opportunities (WWGCSA, GCSAA, TurfNet etc.)
  • Pursue GCSAA Assistant Superintendent Certificate Series
  • Obtain Washington State Pesticide Application License within 90 days of hiring.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of tools and parts needed for golf maintenance operations. Schedule small tool repair and maintenance to assure tools are in safe working order.
  • Coordinate the following with the Equipment Manager:
    • Equipment is in safe working condition.
    • Equipment is properly prepared for use.
    • Ensure equipment maintenance and cleaning meets or exceeds standards.
    • Ensure equipment issues are communicated and scheduled for repair and/or service.
    • Proper LOTO procedures are followed with equipment requiring service.
    • Staff is up to date with equipment training.

Environmental Stewardship:

  • Maintain records to enable timely submission for Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary (ACSP) Silver status recertification.
  • Achieve KemperSports Green-to-a-Tee (GTAT) Level 3 status.
  • Participate in Syngenta Pollinator Project and assist in the completion of the annual ACSP Case Study.
  • Submit entry for annual GCSAA-EIG Environmental Stewardship Awards
  • Assist with the development of Golf Course BMPs for Chambers Bay
  • Coordinate site visits with EnviroLogic for bi-annual water quality testing.

 

Qualifications:

  • College education with degree in Turfgrass Management preferred.
  • 5 years experience assisting in golf course maintenance operations
  • Demonstrated quality written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems; efficiently handle multiple duties under pressure with minimal supervision; work flexible hours as required including nights/weekends.
  • Positive attitude, professional manner and appearance in all situations.
  • Pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and motor vehicle report.

 

Supervises:

Greenkeepers, Irrigation and IPM Technicians

 

Working Conditions:

Work hours may include days and evenings on weekdays and weekends.  Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  May be exposed to inclement weather, potentially dangerous chemicals, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, misdirected golf balls, sharp and rapid equipment movement on a daily basis. Injury may result as a result of exposure to the above if safety policies and practices are not properly followed.

 

Machine/Equipment/Tools Used:

General office machines such as personal computers, printers, copiers, calculators, telephones, etc.  VDT glare screen and wrist rest.  Equipment including but not limited to golf cars, PIT, spray equipment, mowers, heavy machinery.

Compensation:

$31.25-33.65 per hour based on experience and qualifications
